The MacMurray Ranch Sonoma Coast 2005 Pinot Noir is made with grapes from the Sonoma Coast Appellation. I detected hints of rose petals in the bouquet. It tasted a bit oaky with the first sip, a sign that this young wine needed to breathe a bit. Once it had done so, it really opened up nicely, showing a complex taste. The fruit flavor was accompanied by tones of vanilla and a bit of chocolate (an adult version of a twist ice cream cone?). There is definitely some earthy depth to this wine, and it made a nice match for our roasted chicken.
The winemaker notes that 2005 was rainy and cool, rarely getting above 90 degrees. The long growing season is well-suited to making a tasty pinot!
