Storing leftover steak

Place your leftover steak in a sealed container right after you are done with your meal. Store the leftover steak in the refrigerator. The USDA recommends using your refrigerated leftover steak within 3 to 4 days.

Slicing your leftover steak before placing it in the refrigerator saves time later. It is also easier to cut while it is still a bit warm, as a opposed to when it is cold from the refrigerator.

Scraps of fat can be discarded or saved to flavor a sauce or stock.

Reheating steak

Generally, the leftover steak recipes that follow below are the best bet for a flavorful use of the beef.

But you can reheat leftover steak and enjoy it as the centerpiece of a basic steak dinner. Just don’t microwave it!

Recently we had takeout from Smith & Wollensky to celebrate a birthday. With two good pieces of leftover filet mignon, I was motivated to test out some techniques for reheating leftover steak.

The trick is to reheat the leftover steak slowly to avoid overcooked, dried out steak. Following this method from Cook’s Illustrated, I heated the steaks on a wire rack at 250 degrees for about 30 minutes, followed by a quick sear on the stove top. The results were quite good!

OK, so there is a basic method that works for reheating leftover steak. Now, let’s take a look at our collection of the Best Leftover Steak recipes, a variety of ways you can enjoy a second steak meal with a new preparation.

We have divided our leftover steak recipes into several different categories to make it easier to navigate.
